When the Salaulim dam was built in 1975 at Sanguem Taluka it had submerged villages in Goa which are the Curdi Goa Village and Kurpem Village. Most of the villagers were into farming and agriculture, the then Goa Government compensated these families with 10,000 square meters of agricultural land and 500 square meters of land for housing purpose.

History of Curdi Goa

The construction of Salaulim dam began around 1975-1976. As a few areas of the Curdi village started submerging under water, the affected families from that village started migrating to the land that they were allotted by Govt. at Vaade and Valkini.

The village of Curdi Goa, with exception of Talsai area, and half of Kurpem is completely submerged under water from the months of June to mid-April. It starts draining up from the month of mid-April and lasts until May or mid-June.

Shree Someshwar temple devoted to Lord Shiva is located in the Kurdi Goa village. That is the only structure that still remains intact. There was a church which is now completely devastated and Now a small chapel was built on the hill so people can visit again to pray. The Someshwar temple’s Nandi along with other idols was moved to Valkini col. Someshwar Utsav and Feast is celebrated once a year in the month of May.

Indian classical singer Mogubai Kurdikar, mother of Kishori Amonkar is from Kurdi and the ruins of her house about 200 mts from the temple can also be seen there. Across the landscape, you can see a lot of wall of houses and tulsi pedestals. Close to the temple, Dolmen, Menhirs, and other stone structures can be found. A few kilometers away from the Shree Someshwar temple there was an ancient Mahadev temple constructed during the Kadamba period (10 – 11 Century AD).  Even today, in summers Kurdi and Kurpem, have beautiful valleys with green mountainous views.

Traces of Curdi Goa village’s infrastructure is mostly belonging to the Portuguese era which is still visible. These Remains provide information on the village life. Some of the evidence which is visible even today are Temple, Church, School, Tarred road,  and nullahs, Culverts, A building that once housed a police outpost, grocery shop, and a tea shop.

The Curdi Goa Village can be visited only in the month of May, rest all other months this village is surrounded by water.
